Thirteen years ago (hey, that’s appropriate), in 2006, Sonic Team released a reboot of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the series changed forever…mainly because the game sucked. The game, released on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, has now gotten an unofficial Sonic 06 PC version that’s been remade in the Unity engine.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, known as Sonic 06 to most, tells the story of Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends in a new world as they fight to protect both a human princess named Elise from the threat of Doctor Eggman, along with battling an evil spirit known as Mephiles. At the same time a new character, a time-traveling psychic hedgehog named Silver, has come to Sonic’s own time to kill him and prevent the “Iblis Trigger”, an apocalyptic event that destroys the world in his own time.
The game, seen as one of the worst Sonic games ever, gained a huge amount of criticism for its loading times, a dodgy camera, its story, its stability, and its controls, and the reception was so negative, in fact, that planned PC and Nintendo Wii versions were cancelled. This all happened despite an enthusiastic early showing before its release, and the game also got praise for its visuals. Unfortunately, those weren’t enough to save it from all of its other, more important flaws.
The Sonic 06 PC version that was remade in Unity does, at least, allow people that want to experience the terrible gameplay for themselves to be able to do so, and also helps to increase the quality of the visuals somewhat. However, all of the game’s other flaws likely means that unless you’re in it for nostalgia, or are a big Sonic fan, or just want the experience for yourself, you’re unlikely to have a good time.
