Neil Druckmann has announced that the team has finished filming cutscenes of The Last of Us 2’s Ellie and Joel. The director posted an image of Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson (in motion capture suits) on Twitter to share this milestone with the fans. Druckmann captioned the image saying that “the most ambitious cinematic shoot we’ve ever done” is filmed.
In addition to that, The Last of Us 2’s all planned cutscenes have been recorded. Naughty Dog reshared Druckmann’s Tweet to reveal that this was the last planned cinematic shoot.
Apparently, the game is in its final development phase. The aforementioned Tweet comes a day after Creative director Neil Druckmann posted an image of the game’s final/end script. The script reads: “Cut to black. The end”, meanwhile he writes that the team has finished shooting that scene. Before that, we saw another image posted by the director featuring another cast member Laura Bailey, who’s playing an unknown character in The Last of Us 2.
Filming all of the game’s is indeed a big milestone for the studio but it doesn’t mean that the game is ready to be released.
We still have work ahead of us, including putting these cinematics in the game, but this is a nice little milestone, Naughty Dog wrote.
Motion or performance capture is usually done out of order just like in films. Meaning that these scenes have yet to be implemented in the game, the gameplay is not finalized, needs polishing and possible reshoots.
With that said, it’s fair to say that The Last of Us 2 release date is not going to be sometime in 2019 despite the rumors. However, a 2020 release date of the game seems more realistic.
The Last of Us 2 can also turn out to be one of the launch titles for Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 5 which has been officially confirmed. Keep in mind that the renowned studio doesn’t have to rush things, they can take as long as they want to make sure that the game is a worthy successor to The Last of Us.
Unfortunately, we haven’t seen much of the game for a long time now. The last footage of the game that we saw was at E3 2018. Since then we have seen nothing but these interesting Tweets by the game director and a free dynamic theme showcasing a scene from the game.
With Sony not attending Electronic Entertainment Expo 3 this year, we can expect the most-awaited The Last of Us 2 to make an appearance at PlayStation Experience 2019 with a release date reveal.
