All the Clues Pointing Towards 2019 The Last of Us Part 2 Release Date

The Last of Us Part 2 was announced back in 2016 and since then Naughty Dog and Sony only gave glimpses of the game until E3 2018 where Sony finally revealed gameplay. However, both Sony Interactive Entertainment and Naughty Dog have been silent when it comes to The Last of Us Part 2 release date.

Interestingly, there have been a lot of hints pointing towards the game’s release in 2019. Here I have compiled all of the clues/hints indicating that The Last of Us Part II will launch in 2019.

There is no doubt that the Last of Us 2 is one of the most-anticipated games. The first title was a phenomenal success for Sony and since then, the fan base has grown exponentially.

Fans are really looking forward to the game but Sony and Naughty Dog are just teasing us at this point. While Sony hasn’t confirmed it yet, the following are the clues indicating 2019 release date for The Last of Us Part 2.

Development

Aside from the fact that The Last of Us Part II has been in development for years, there are actual clues hinting at a 2019 release date.

For starters, just recently game director Neil Druckmann revealed that he has shot the game’s finale.

With the mocap being completely done for the game, it’s safe to assume that developers are now polishing the game and The Last of Us 2 will be ready just in time for fall 2019 release.

Not only that, back in December 2017 during PSX 2017 Druckmann himself confirmed that the development on the game in 50-60% done and the game went into full production in September 2017.

We’ve handed off a bunch of levels, there’s a bunch of stuff being worked on. We’re like 50 to 60% done.

It’s been over a year since then and given Naughty Dog’s track record, the studio is very efficient at developing games in a relatively short amount of time and this time the studio had to develop the remaining 50-40% of the game.

The game that took the longest to develop by Naughty Dogs was Uncharted 4 and that was due to Amy Hennig leaving the studio mid-development.

Not only that, Neil Druckmann had to completely rewrite the story and even then it took the studio around 3-years to develop Uncharted 4.

As for The Last of Us Part 2, the development has seemingly been very smooth and the game has been in development for over 3-years.

Sony’s Release Schedule

One of the most important aspects that have made PlayStation 4 a huge success is its quality exclusive games. For the past few years, Sony has released it’s major PS4 exclusives during the first half of the year.

Uncharted 4 launched in May 2016, Horizon Zero Dawn also launched in the first half of 2017, God Of War launched in April 2018. Not only that, Sony also had one major PS4 exclusive release during Fall.

In 2018 we saw the release of God Of War PS4 during the first half of the year while Spider-Man PS4 launch in fall. For 2019, Sony has Days Gone to release in the first half of the year. However, there is no game announced by Sony for fall 2019.

I know Sony has The Last Of Us Part 2, Ghost Of Tsushima and Death Stranding to fill that gap. But given that Death Stranding is a long way from release, the only possible candidate for fall 2019 release is Naughty Dog’s upcoming game.

Other Clues

If the aforementioned clues aren’t enough to convince you that The Last of Us Part 2 will have a 2019 release date, worry not I have more.

Earlier this year a listing for The Last of Us 2 emerged on PlayStation Store. Interestingly, the listing was part of “Coming Soon” lineup games for 2019 releases. While Sony has removed the game from the list but it’s another clue hinting at the game’s fall 2019 release.

Not only that, some marketing material for The Last of Us II also leaked suggesting that the game will launch in October 2019.

Furthermore, last year the official PlayStation Music Youtube channel uploaded a video revealing video games that will launch in 2019. Guess what, the Last of Us Part 2 was among the list of games confirming that game will launch this year.

All of these leaks pointing towards a 2019 release for The Last of Us Part II can’t be just coincidences. It seems pretty clear the game will launch later this year.

From the game’s development to Sony’s PS4 exclusives release schedule and all of the leaks from PlayStation Store and PlayStation Music suggest that the Last of Us 2 will launch in 2019.
