During an interview you can find here, Matt Burke of NetheRealm Studios talks about what we can expect from the Mortal Kombat 11 story mode. Specifically, how it compares to the previous installments in their story.
Now we’ve already covered in an article before that the story of MK 11 will last about 8 hours in gameplay. The setting itself revolves around a lot of time travel and paradoxes. The focus is on delivering the feel of different timelines colliding with each other.
Matt talked about how we’ll have encounters of characters meeting their alternate selves. Liu Kang’s past self as the chosen one meeting his future self as the king of the nether realm. These kind of dilemmas are what the story will thrive on.
He also talked about Kronika and her role as the big bad of Mortal Kombat 11. He mentioned that everybody around NetheRealm studios is very happy with how well she’s fit the part and how fans themselves would be very pleased.
The two during the interview also talked about the Mortal Kombat X story mode and that’s where I’ll weigh in. While the story was overall not bad, it had way too many flaws for me to really enjoy it.
First of all, I really dislike the way power scaling was done and who was given plot armor. I love Johnny Cage but there should be no possible way for him to beat both Scorpion and Sub-Zero simultaneously.
Similarly, Erron Black didn’t fire a single bullet. Also, how did Ermac not just kill the special forces when they charged him? So many little inconsistencies that bothered me way too much.
I hope they make the Mortal Kombat 11 story more believable. So far it looks great though with the vibe that they’ve set. The roster is also arguably more impressive than MK X minus the absence of Mileena. Hopefully, she’s in the DLC at some point.
