Sega has announced that it has paused “Judge Eyes: The will of the grim reaper” sales for PS4 following the arrest of actor Pierre Taki on suspicion of using cocaine. It’s a big violation against Japan’s drug control law. This sudden change of events was announced through the company’s official site.
Pierre Taki plays the role of Kyohei Hamura in Juge Eyes who’s the commander of Matsugane family (a subsidiary of the Tojo Clan which is based in Kamurocho).
Here’s what Sega had to say about the matter in its press release.
We believe that the arrest of Mr. Pierre, who is a performer of our product JUDGE EYES: The Testament of the Grim Reaper, is highly regrettable.
We have received arrest reports and are currently confirming the facts, but for the time being we have decided to refrain from shipping and DL sales of the product and posting of product HP etc. We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers and related parties. We will notify you of future responses as soon as we determine.
Moreover, Sega has now deleted all of its Tweets related to the game. Its effect on the western release remains to be seen.
According to the reports, investigators searched Taki’s car and house but no signs of cocaine were found. It all turned bad when he was arrested and his urine test turned out to be positive.
Kotaku reports that Taki has admitted violating Japan’s law of drug control. Investigators are now looking into his mobile phone for further proof of his use of drugs. Possession of cocaine in Japan can lead up to 7 years of jail which is absolutely terrifying.
It’s worth noticing that Sega had to replace actor Hiroki Narimiya by Toshiki Masuda in re-released Yakuza 4 due to the original actor’s allegations of drug use.
The Japanese developer is known for strict rules and policies so this could turn out to be a big deal as they might have to just remove Taki from the game.
Taki is known for his acting and roles in various TV and film productions. Before that, he was a musician and co-founder of famous synthpop group Denki Groove.
He has previously voiced Olaf in the Japanese version of Frozen film and in the recently released Kingdom Hearts 3. It will be interesting to see how other companies like Walt Disney Japan and Square Enix act on it.
Judge Eyes is an action adventure game and a spin-off of Yakuza series developed exclusively for PlayStation 4.
