Skybound Entertainment has canceled all the versions of Overkill’s The Walking Dead because it failed to meet their quality standards. They have also terminated the game’s contract with publisher Starbreeze Studios.
There’s no information yet about the PC version of Overkill’s The Walking Dead which released in November 2018 with nine episodes of the season 2 for Deluxe Edition owners.
It’s expected that the support for it will be discontinued. Unfortunately, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players looking forward to the game since 2014 are left disappointed.
The announcement comes a week after when the publisher “505 Games” confirmed that Overkill’s The Walking Dead is not canceled but postponed due to the on-going development.
In the released statement, Skybound said that it has worked hard with Starbreeze since 2014 on the Walking Dead game but things didn’t work out.
As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on OVERKILL’S THE WALKING DEAD. Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional Co-op Action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately OVERKILL’S THE WALKING DEAD did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised. We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.
For those who are worried, Skybound will continue to work and deliver new experiences of the Walking Dead in the future but not with Overkill’s game. Until then you can play The Walking Dead The Final Season episode 3 which, as the name suggests, will conclude clementine’s story.
If you have pre-ordered the game on PS4 then you are in luck as Sony is refunding players. It’s not a total loss as you can get the money back and spend it on some other game which won’t be canceled.
It’s sad to see how the game got killed but the developers knew that it was going to fail even before its launch. An anonymous developer working on the game said: “everyone knew it was going to tank. No matter how much you polish a turd, it’s still a turd”.
