After the Day one patch of Anthem, players noticed a subtle change that wasn’t mentioned in any of the patch notes. The detail was that of certain Anthem loot drops being nerfed and harder to attain as compared to before the patch. Bioware and EA were questioned about this and the lead producer of Anthem has answered the call.
Ben Irving came to Anthem’s subreddit to clarify any doubts the players of Anthem had regarding loot drops. He explained that the reduction in drops wasn’t a nerf, but rather a fix of an unintentional buff.
“In our Friday changes, one of the edits we made had the side effect of increasing certain drop chances. This was not intended. Once we identified the problem we changed it back to how it was before. That was about 11 hours later. Took a little time for that message to make it around internally and to make sure we understood what happened and how to avoid it going forward. It’s never our intent to make changes without being transparent, so we wanted to come in here to respond and clarify.”
A stealth patch or video game tweak slipping under the radar is usually bad. Unless it’s meant to be a surprise like Reptile in Mortal Kombat during his debut.
In this case, the patch itself was technically a limitation of reward for the player. That’s definitely something you shouldn’t keep a lid on during a patch.
In Bioware and Anthem’s defense, Irving did clarify and sort out the confusion with his confirmation. Players were still left disappointed at the lost opportunity, but at least they know the whole situation now.
Although this patch note was unaccounted for, EA did release this 90 day roadmap of add-ons and expansions that Anthem has planned currently.
Is this what video gaming has come to though? Companies pumping out bumpy glitchy games to make their promised release dates. Only to fix the issues later on with post-launch patches and updates.
Either way, it was a bit unprofessional for Bioware to not to mention the nerf to Anthem loot drops, even if it was 11 hours post patch. They covered it up by Irving’s subreddit post so the situation is more or less pacified now.
