In the wake of the Avengers End Game trailer, we also had our first look at the second installment of the MCU Spider-Man. Dubbed Far From Home, we see Peter on a school trip to Europe which then gets amped up by Nick Fury’s appearance. Another character we saw revealed in the movie was Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. What’s his role here though?
Mysterio like many other characters we see in the MCU is a persona from the comic books. Specifically that of Quentin Beck, a former Hollywood special effects artist turned villain. Not the money laundering kind of villain though, more reminiscent of what Syndrome was in the Incredibles, a facade. Knowing the character’s history, it’s safe to assume that he’s doing the same here in Spider-Man Far from home, Mysterio is basically playing a hero.
What about those elemental baddies we saw in the trailer? The figures being formed out of the water, dirt and so on. A popular theory is that they’re iterations of Hydroman and Sandman specifically, which is mainly attributed to this reference:
Ned is Hydroman.
But no seriously, look at the boat in the background, ASM 212. Sound familiar?
The same issue that originally revealed Hydroman. Coincidence? I think not. There were two other easter eggs hidden as number plates that hinted to the appearance of Sandman and Molten Man as well.
More little nods to the classic Spidey comics so hardcore fans can have their fill.
How are these three entwined with Mysterio though in a single MCU Spider-Man movie? Well if your memories of the first movie are still fresh, we saw three classic Spider-Man villains in Homecoming- The Vulture, Scorpion, and Shocker. Now assuming we see three more in this movie, Mysterio, Sandman, and Hydroman, what number does that make it? Six. What does the number six have to do with Spider-Man?
If this theory’s right, we could be seeing the Sinister Six in the third installment of the Spider-Man trilogy of the Marvel cinematic universe. But before that, what do Marvel Studios have planned for us in Spider-Man Far From Home?
It’s not hard to believe Mysterio being the mastermind behind all this since Hydro and Sandman have always been more brawn than brain. Whereas if any of you have played Shattered Dimensions, you know that Mysterio is the real deal. Only time will tell, we still need to see how everyone survives End Game first.
