Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown was released for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC last Friday, and already has been making waves on the internet. Not just because of its great gameplay, story, and selection of planes (already hallmarks of the series), but also because of what people are calling the Ace Combat 7 dog.
The dog in question first appears in the introductory cutscene to Mission 6 of the game, accompanying the Erusean princess Rosa Cossette D’Elise, to the Erusean Air Force base being used by two of the story’s major characters, Mihaly and Dr. Schroeder. While it doesn’t really do anything in the cutscene (literally), that’s its main draw.
The Ace Combat 7 dog, hilariously, isn’t even an actual model in the game. The image of the dog is, quite literally, just a JPEG that the developers put in as a tribute to a dog owned by a developer, according to a tweet by director Kazutoki Kono. The dog in question died a short while after the picture used in the game was taken, but despite the sad circumstances, it hasn’t stopped fans from thinking the entire thing to be hilarious.
While the dog does have something to do with the story (which I won’t elaborate on due to spoilers), its first appearance in Mission 6’s cutscene is particularly notable because it’s a completely still image that doesn’t even walk around, simply sitting there in one position as Princess D’Elise meets Mihaly’s granddaughters.
Even publisher Bandai Namco and various other publications across the Internet have been poking fun at the Ace Combat 7 dog, which just speaks to how much players have been loving how out-of-nowhere the dog’s picture is.
If you want to see Ace Combat 7 dog for yourself as you play through the game’s story (in the midst of flying all of the planes and whatnot), you can currently buy Ace Combat 7 on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.
