If you’re one of the many Bandai Namco fans that have been waiting for a new mainline Ace Combat game to come out, the studio is nearly ready to release Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. The Ace Combat 7 launch trailer dropped just today, and the game comes out on January 18.
Ace Combat 7 is a continuation in the history of Ace Combat’s world of Strangereal, taking place in a conflict between the Kingdom of Erusea and the Osean Federation, over the placement of an Osean space elevator in Erusean territory. Players take on the role of a member of Spare Squadron, a squadron of prisoner fighter pilots forced into battle.
One of the many things that will be part of the Ace Combat 7 story, and is seen in the Ace Combat 7 launch trailer, is a real-world debate as well, as drones and unmanned aerial vehicles begin to replace human pilots. This turns into a problem for players with the Arsenal Bird, a massive aerial carrier capable of deploying dozens of drones at a time.
Ace Combat 7 holds the hopes of a lot of fans on it, since it’s the first numbered Ace Combat game since Ace Combat 6, which came out back in 2007. Since then the only Ace Combat games that have come out are online multiplayer-only games, and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, which takes place in the real world.
The Ace Combat 7 launch trailer also shows off a number of the different planes we’ll be flying, which includes an A-10 Thunderbolt and even a more futuristic jet that uses a laser in battle, though we don’t know its name so far.
Ace Combat 7 will be releasing on both the Xbox One and the Playstation 4. Depending on which console you pre-order the game on, you can also pick up an older Ace Combat game along with it. Pre-ordering the game on the Playstation 4 gets you Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, while on the Xbox you get Ace Combat 6: Skies of Liberation.
Regardless of which you pick, you can pick up Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown on January 18 for the Xbox One and Playstation 4, though a PC release will be coming February 1.
