In case you needed a better indicator of how well the Nintendo Switch was doing, a report has recently come out from Nintendo saying that Nintendo Switch sales have passed sales of the Playstation 4 in Japan after just two years on the market, compared to the Playstation 4’s four years.
The Switch, according to Nintendo, has sold 6,670,000 units in Japan alone in two years, while the Playstation 4 and Playstation 4 Slim have sold 6,540,000 units. However, there’s no information about whether or not the Playstation 4 Pro sales would push the Playstation 4 over the Switch in terms of sales.
However, at the same time it’s a testament to how well-loved the Switch is that it’s managed to sell so much in Japan alone in just two years. In addition to being a great improvement over Nintendo’s previous-generation console, the Wii U, the Switch also has a number of different, critically acclaimed first-party games going for it.
These games included The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, and most recently, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, all of which have proven to be great system sellers in addition to smash hits. And that’s without talking about the many third-party games that have also been put on the console.
While the Playstation 4 has had a great many different smash hits of its own, including Horizon Zero Dawn, Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Uncharted 4, The Last Of Us Remastered, and more, the console has apparently yet to reach the same amount of success that the Nintendo Switch has, especially in so short a time.
There’s no telling how much more successful the Switch will be in the next few years, especially with whatever else Nintendo has planned for the console soon, but if it ends up being as successful as it has been since it launched in March of 2017 in terms of Nintendo Switch sales, it will be a big boost for Nintendo.
