If you were an Xbox gamer all the way back during the original Xbox days, you might have heard of the Mercenaries game. Now, you have another chance to play that game for nostalgia value, because it’s the first original Xbox Games With Gold game to come out on the service.
Mercenaries, full title Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction, is an open-world third-person shooter game where players took on the role of a hired mercenary during a multinational military operation in North Korea after a military coup. Players go around completing contracts to both earn money and prevent a nuclear war breaking out over the situation.
Mercenaries originally came out in 2005 for the original Xbox, and while Microsoft began to make original Xbox games as part of the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility program, there’s never been any kind of original Xbox Games With Gold game, with Xbox One and Xbox 360 games being the only kinds available.
Two of the other games that are included in Games With Gold this month are the puzzle game Qube 2, and another puzzle platformer game called Never Alone, which is a retelling of a myth from the Alaskan Inupiat people. While neither of these are as action-packed as Mercenaries, they still provide a wide variety of experiences for players to play. However, the fourth free game coming this month is Dragon Age 2, the sequel to BioWare’s smash hit Dragon Age: Origins. While it doesn’t come with its DLC, players can expect a story full of twists and turns in it.
While these games aren’t all as notable as last month’s Games With Gold, which included Battlefield 1, Dante’s Inferno, Race the Sun, Victor Vran, and Assassin’s Creed, they’re free, and are sure to give you at least a few hours of fun if you download them now. Hopefully, Mercenaries won’t be the last original Xbox Games With Gold game to come to the service.
