The hype for Super Smash Bros Ultimate is palpable, and considering how big this game is going to be, it’s not that surprising. Apparently, Super Smash Bros Ultimate preorders are making the game the highest-preselling Super Smash Bros game, and best-preselling Nintendo Switch game to boot. The game comes out December 7.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate was only announced last year, but it has rapidly built up its hype with a succession of announcements, such as how every character, every stage, and almost every bit of music will be coming to this new game, along with a variety of new characters and five different DLC characters.
And considering how every Super Smash Bros game ends up fitting into gaming culture, it’s not really surprising how many Super Smash Bros Ultimate preorders have ended up coming out. With so many different characters and stages both old and new, Ultimate is sure to leave its mark on gaming for a great many years, even if it turns out (however unlikely that is) to be the final Super Smash Bros game to come out.
The amount of preorders is even more astounding considering how many highly popular games the Switch already has on it. When the console first came out in March of last year, there were so many sales of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that for a while they outstripped the number of consoles sold. By September of this year, Splatoon 2 had sold nearly 7.5 million copies, even more than the original game.
While there’s no telling if Super Smash Bros Ultimate preorders will end up surpassing even all of the copies of Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 (though considering the appeal of the game it’s highly likely), we do know that it’ll be a really successful game, furthering the Switch’s amazing track record. The game once again comes out on December 7 exclusively for the Switch.
