Poor Chap Gets Hate Messages for Sharing the Same Name As a Red Dead Redemption 2 Villain

Rockstar’s latest title, Red Dead Redemption 2 released at the end of October. Of course due to its popularity, people immediately hopped aboard the hype train and experienced the game’s story. Specifically familiarizing themselves with the Red Dead Redemption 2 villain, O’Driscoll, who’s gang rivals your gang with Dutch. Which means Arthur as well as the rest of the cast hate anyone with the name O’Driscoll with a passion.

Players who emotionally invested themselves into the game might have gotten a bit too attached, because now they’re shooting negative messages at an actual person named Colm’O’Driscoll.

Those who’ve played the open world western are by now familiar with the term “Damn O’Driscolls”. Which has become something of a meme now. Arthur and his gang’s blind hatred for that name is the subject of both a driving force for players and a source for humor.

It gets taken a bit too far though when an actual person sharing the same last name gets attacked. Colm O’Driscoll of Ireland doesn’t even own an Xbox or a PS4. This initially must’ve added to the guy’s confusion when he was randomly scorned for his last name by gamers around the world.

In a word with Eurogamer, Colm added:

“I find the whole thing kinda funny, but the messages are starting to get annoying. A little part of me worries that some of these people are so emotionally invested in the game that they’re starting to lose perception of what’s real and what isn’t.”

Luckily, the messages have only proved to be a minor inconvenience to the fella. So far he doesn’t seem to be in any actual danger and really, it should stay that way. Colm has resorted to blocking the hate mailers best he can but knowing how popular the game is, that won’t be an easy task.

So if you see a feller by the name of O’Driscoll in the streets. Please keep in mind that the Red Dead Redemption 2 villain doesn’t actually exist. At most, tip your hat to em with a good ol’ howdy. But let’s not go beyond that alright? Great.
