Rumor Says Microsoft Purchasing Obsidian Entertainment, Creators Of Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny

A rumor is going around saying that soon we'll have Microsoft purchasing Obsidian Entertainment, who developed the Pillars of Eternity games and Tyranny.

A rumor has started going around saying about Microsoft purchasing Obsidian Entertainment, the same creators of Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny. If the rumor turns out to be true, this could mean a lot of good for Obsidian, especially considering their past fortunes, where tough times nearly brought the studio to a close.

In addition to Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny, Obsidian is also responsible for developing Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout: New Vegas, all well-regarded games in their own rights (even if they were all buggy as hell.) Getting an actual publisher that helps to give them a bigger budget, especially with their current track record, would definitely help the studio’s fortunes both in scale and quality.

One person with knowledge of the alleged deal about Microsoft Purchasing Obsidian Entertainment said that he was around 90% sure that the purchase would go through. However, at the same time, a Microsoft spokesperson has said that they don’t comment on rumors or speculation, and Obsidian has made a similar statement, beyond that the Rumors album from Fleetwood Mac is still good.

Microsoft already announced that they have been on a shopping spree over the course of the past year, with a large number of studios being acquired by the publisher and therefore giving them access to a number of different games. That list of games could be extended to Obsidian as well, though Obsidian has already been publishing their games on the Xbox One and PC originally.

Whether the possibility of Microsoft purchasing Obsidian Entertainment ends up coming true or not, hopefully Obsidian’s fortunes that started with Pillars of Eternity’s release end up continuing to go up, whether it’s with Microsoft or some other big publisher that will hopefully treat them right.

You can play any of Obsidian’s more recent games on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, or PC.
