The Witcher Author Demands CD Projekt Red To Pay Up $16 Million In Royalties

The author of the Witcher, Andrzej Sapkowski, has made it no secret that he didn't expect games to be successful when he sold rights to CD Projekt Red.

The author and creator of the Witcher, Andrzej Sapkowski, has made it no secret that he didn’t expect Witcher games to be successful when he sold the video games rights to CD Projekt Red. However, The Witcher is one of the most successful franchises in the industry and Andrzej Sapkowski has demanded more money from the developer rather unsuccessfully.

In its latest blog post, CD Projekt Red posted a demand of payment from the Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski. The author made a demand of PLN 60 million which is around $1.61 million.

The Witcher author demanded the payment as royalties and CD Projekt Red simply said no to the demand citing Andrzej Sapkowski’s demand “groundless” as the author gave away his right to royalties while signing the contract for Witcher video game rights.

The Management Board of CD Projekt … hereby announces that on 1 October 2018 the Company received an official demand for payment filed by plenipotentiaries of Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski.

The notice indicates that Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski expects payment of additional royalties beyond what had been contractually agreed upon between himself and the Company.

Andrzej Sapkowski cited that the contract only included the “first in a series of games, and therefore distribution of all other games, including their expansions, add-ons etc., is, simply speaking, unlawful”.

It will be interesting to see how this will end up but, it will end in one of two ways, either the author will back off or CD Projekt Red will have to pay up.

While we won’t be getting a new RPG title in Witcher franchise following The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt but, we are getting a Witcher spin-off Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.

Thronebreaker is a single player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher that combines narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an open-world action RPG developed by CD Projekt Red for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
