Dropping Campaign is Part of an Evolution: Black Ops 4 Dev

By now we all know how Call of Duty Black Ops 4 dropped its single-player mode in favor of creating a Battle Royale mode, which worked pretty well by the way. It does seem like an evolution for the series, in fact, this is exactly what Treyarch had in mind, to evolve Call of Duty.

However, rest assured this does not mean Call of Duty games are dropping single-player mode for good. Future Call of Duty games will feature story modes, according to Activision.

While some may not like it, this evolution was necessary, Treyarch believes. Call of Duty needed to change in a drastic manner which unfortunately came at the cost of the single-player mode. Speaking in a recent interview, Treyarch head Dan Bunting stated:

The most important aspect of game development is being able to adapt. If you can’t look at something that you’re doing honestly and say, ‘This thing isn’t good enough’ or ‘This isn’t what we want,’ and ‘We need to make a change.’ If you can’t do that yourself, then you’re not adapting. You’re not going to evolve in a way that’s going to constantly deliver exciting experiences for your fans

In the same interview, David Vonderhaar confirmed that Black Ops 4 never really had a campaign which isn’t what recent reports say. Black Ops 4 did have a campaign that was dropped in early 2018 to complete work on the Battle Royale mode, sources say.

But Treyarch and Activision are adamant that there was never a story mode planned for Black Ops 4. Whatever’s the case, Black Ops 4 Blackout is seeing a positive response from the community. On the other hand, other multiplayer modes are being ripped apart by popular streamers and influencers.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is going to be a mixed bag and not everyone will be happy. Still, one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a huge success, especially after how EA screwed up with Battlefield V.
