Prepare to leave your thumbs bruised in the most classic fashion because there is a new Streets of Rage 4 in development.
In a press release last night, publisher Dotemu officially announced a sequel to the old school beat-em-up franchise through a nifty reveal trailer. The developmental duties will be overseen by Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games, known for creating platformers and side-scrollers using digitized graphics.
Axel and Blaze are all set to return in “an entirely original arcade-style romp” that will feature classic as well as some new fighting mechanics. There will also be a “fresh” storyline that will take on the “serious crime problem” plaguing the city.
The franchise has always been hailed for its strong visual style and soundtracks. Streets of Rage 4 will punch those same buttons, boasting beautiful hand-drawn visuals and adrenaline-rushing music.
Suffice to say, the much-awaited sequel promises to build upon the same much-loved pillars but with a few flavors from the new generation.
It has been nearly three decades since the franchise was shelved. The original Streets of Rage was released on the Sega Genesis in 1991. The following two sequels arrived in 1992 and 1994 respectively. While the Streets of Rage 2 installment did receive a 3DS port in 2015, fans have obviously been keeping their fingers crossed for a direct sequel.
Streets of Rage 4 remains without a release date for the time being. The intended platforms have also not been confirmed.
More information is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
