Soulcalibur 6 Could Be The Last Entry Of The Soulcalibur Franchise

Soulcalibur 6 will be upon us in over a month and fans are excited about the game. However, the developer behind the game has noted that Soulcalibur 6 might be the last game in the franchise.

Speaking with Dualshockers, game producer Motohiro Okubo talked about the future of the franchise and noted that Soulcalibur 6 might be the last entry in the long-running franchise if the game doesn’t do well in terms of sales.

He noted that the Soulcalibur IP itself was facing a crisis before they started to work on Soulcalibur 6 and it took a lot of convincing before Bandai Namco greenlit the project.

The first thing is that the IP itself of the SoulCalibur franchise had low expectations from the company. It was actually facing a crisis of maybe disappearing. It took time for me to convince the company.

When asked if the game could be the very last entry in the franchise if it doesn’t do well financially he replied: “Yeah, that’s right”.

However, he noted that the developing team doesn’t want to blackmail fans or players into picking up the game or having players pick it up to save the franchise.

He further noted that the studio is developing Soulcalibur 6 the way they want to as they have nothing to lose if this is the last entry in the franchise.

Since the SoulCalibur brand is facing a crisis, we have nothing to lose, so we just decided to do what we want to do.

Speaking of the game, it is currently scheduled to launch on PC and current-gen consoles and there is no news if the game would ever come to Nintendo Switch or not.

While the studio hasn’t confirmed that the game would come to Switch but has noted that the Switch version of Soulcalibur VI is currently on hold.

At the moment there is no development for Switch at all. I understand that the Switch is a very successful hardware, and of course, if there is a possibility, then it would be great to do it.
At the moment we’re focusing on the October 19th launch, so we don’t even have the time to think about that possibility. After the launch, we’ll think about the possibility.

Soulcalibur 6 is a fighting game in development at Bandai Namco and is scheduled to launch on October 19, 2018, for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
