The Nintendo Direct that focused on Super Smash Bros Ultimate made a large number of announcements today, announcing new characters, additional content, and still leaving a few questions for us to ask. Among these new characters were Simon and Richter Belmont, two members of Castlevania’s own Belmont family vampire hunters.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate has already made a huge amount of waves for living up to its name, including every single Super Smash Bros character (except Waluigi) in its character roster, along with dozens of maps and musical tracks. Today’s Nintendo Direct, in addition to adding in Simon and Richter Belmont, also added characters like Chrom from Fire Emblem Awakening, King K. Rool from Donkey Kong, and others.
As detailed in the Direct, Simon and Richter are Echo Fighters, meaning that in Smash parlance they will both be essentially the same characters, with identical movesets and identical Final Smashes. Other Echo Fighters that have already been revealed include Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi, Samus Aran and Dark Samus, and Chrom and Ike.
There are likely a few other characters that remain to be announced in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but as characters who haven’t been in a Smash Bros game before (not to mention not even being from a Nintendo game), Simon and Richter are still a very unanticipated addition to the Super Smash Bros roster.
As a series that has normally only been concerned with Nintendo properties, adding in characters from other developers like Capcom or Konami in any way but assist trophies has only been a recent thing, starting with Brawl when Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog were added. Since then, Super Smash Bros Wii U added in characters like Ryuu, Cloud Strife, Bayonetta, Mega Man, and Pac Man, and with the addition of Simon and Richter Belmont, complete with a Dracula’s Castle stage, that trend looks like it will be continuing.
