Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be a pretty big jump compared to the Witcher series, which is what put CD Projekt RED on the map. However, going from third-person medieval fantasy in The Witcher to late 21st century science fiction first person shooting in Cyberpunk 2077 FPS gameplay is something that CDPR believes that they can pull off well.
CD Projekt RED ended their Witcher series with a bang several years ago with the Blood and Wine DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and since then we had heard very little, if anything, about Cyberpunk 2077 until we finally got a trailer at this year’s past E3. However, even that wasn’t very much gameplay and more cutscenes, with the game’s actual E3 demo being a behind-closed-doors exclusive event.
From what other people have told us about the game, Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person open-world game (fitting for a game where guns are the primary method of combat since third-person would likely move into chest-high walls territory).
While CD Projekt RED is likely far from familiar with anything like first-person shooter gameplay, that doesn’t change the fact that they believe that Cyberpunk 2077 FPS gameplay will be worth the risk.
It’s not like they don’t have experienced people for it, either. Quest designer Patrick Mills said that he used to work for Obsidian Entertainment and used to work on Alpha Protocol. The studio got a lot of good comments for how their character in Alpha Protocol was as a player avatar, and Mills said that htye’re aiming to do that with V, Cyberpunk’s main protagonist.
There was a lot of blowback when the game was announced to only be in first-person, but CD Projekt RED has its reasons for it. In addition to making the gunplay better, Mills has also said that it will help immerse players in the story as well, such as allowing them to see the world in more detail and be able to look up and see the tops of skyscrapers, something third-person games can’t do.
Either way if you want to see how Cyberpunk 2077 FPS gameplay will look, hopefully we’ll be getting a gameplay video sometime soon in the future.
