We already know Dragon Age games are a must play for every die-hard RPG fan. However, it has been quite a while to get back into the world of magic since the last outing; Dragon Age: Inquisition was released back in 2014. Since then BioWare launched the mildly disappointing Mass Effect: Andromeda and are now focusing on Anthem. However, recently there have been job listings for Dragon Age 4 along with the confirmation from the team behind BioWare that a new Dragon Age game is in development.
What We Know About Dragon Age 4?
This seriously hypes us as long-time Dragon Age fans and gives us an opportunity to talk about what we know so far regarding the game. First of all, although BioWare is quite busy on Anthem, work on the Dragon Age 4 is still happening so you do not have to wait as long as say, what you will for The Elder Scrolls 6. Thanks to this tweet by Mark Darrah, we are excited to hear more about the game.
Halfway through my trip to Barcelona!
I’m here showing Anthem internally to EA. I am EP of BOTH DA and Anthem working with @Bio_Warner as Game Director
Anthem’s up next but there are people hard at work on both franchises and I look forward to sharing more in the future

General Manager of BioWare, Casey Hudson, also shared some brief details in a recent interview where he emphasized on the focus of the game that will be characters and story solely. There was also a hint towards services like live events to expand the life cycle of the game. When players finish the main campaign, they would need something to get back to the game. Assassin’s Creed: Origins did that expertly with online events like the Anubis boss event. Therefore, this is definitely a step in the right direction.
Regarding the story, Alexis Kennedy of RPG titles like Fallen London and Sunless Sea is crafting the lore for the new game. He is working in the UK as opposed to where BioWare is currently working. He had to say this about the development:
“What I can say is I have been given considerable autonomy to work on a storyline bit of lore which is well-segregated from other parts of the game. It is nothing that grandiose but it is distinct. It’s a bit of lore which has not been addressed much to date in Dragon Age.”
Like his previous games, you can expect dialogue heavy conversations based around choices and consequences. The writing is sure to be a strong point and will suit the world of Dragon Age 4.
We will most likely have a new protagonist following the trend of the previous games. Additionally, the Trespasser DLC was designed such as to provide a closure to the story arch of the protagonist in Dragon Age: Inquisition. There will be some new features making their way into the game as well as a tactical combat feature like XCOM, thanks to a poll for fans. Yes, polls that BioWare puts up and their results are to be taken seriously.
Setting for the game is up for speculation but a ‘big map getting printed’ as mentioned by Mark Darrah coupled with the cliffhanger towards the end of Trespasser DLC might point towards Tevinter Imperium that is ripe for exploration and has interesting figures like powerful mages and whatnot.
Lastly, the romance options in the next game will be more diverse and open to how the relationships worked in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Former creative director, Mike Laidlaw, liked the idea of this to have ‘stronger identities’ to tell ‘stronger stories’. Even though he has left the company, the staff will take some inspiration from his ideas.
Head back for more info hopefully at Gamescom 2018 if we are lucky. Meanwhile, you can get your fill of Dragon Age 4 by reading the new comics centered around it.
