If you’re familiar with how bad video game movies can be, then you’re likely familiar with the Super Mario Brothers movie. However, Reggie Fils-Amie has given his own thoughts on the Mario movie that’s been in discussion for several years now. He also talked a bit about other partnerships.
The Super Mario Brothers movie was a movie that came out in 1993, and starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo in the title roles of Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. The movie was critically panned with only 14% of reviewers giving it positive reviews, and its main potential these days is solely for the possibility of memes.
Various other movies based on video games, such as Uwe Boll’s legendarily films like Bloodrayne and Postal, have gotten a similar reception, but the closest video game movie to being good that’s come out recently is the Warcraft movie, which came out back in 2016 and still didn’t get positive reviews. Hopefully by this point Nintendo is able to pick out good directors and studios that can do their properties justice.
While Mario isn’t really known for having epic stories (even Super Mario RPG came out it was a very lighthearted sort of game despite a story about the stars being stolen), a good Mario movie might open the door to other Nintendo game movies, like a Legend of Zelda movie or even something Kirby-related.
In addition to talking about the Mario movie, Reggie has also talked about how Nintendo’s main focus is to bring joy to people through their various properties, across a wide range of mediums, ranging from cereal boxes with Kellogg’s, to their own video games. Shigeru Miyamoto is also being included in the discussions, and as the creator of most of Nintendo’s oldest properties, including him in the discussions is the best option that they have for something like this.
