Video games and nudity have a long-standing relationship. We have all seen those scanty women from classic God of War games, Mass Effect, and more. It is safe to say nudity sells and developers often end up adding it where it does not make sense at all.
However, that may change, as nudity, sex, and romantic relationships start to play a bigger role in video games. According to Ubisoft’s Lionel Raynaud, Executive Vice President of Creative for Ubisoft’s Canadian studios suggests that future Ubisoft games like Far Cry, The Division, Assassin’s Creed, and Watch Dogs could feature detailed romantic systems on PS5 and the next Xbox.
If we have 500 characters in the game we create, we can decide which sections of characters will appeal to a certain audience.
There were questions about romance [during a recent corporate event], and it’s very obvious that there is an audience that is waiting for this.
And some of our games are really ready to offer not only gunplay and fights, but romance, or friendship, or a ton of other things that would be super-interesting – and make the characters become more interesting and lovable because they don’t speak only about fights, but also about things that players live in their own lives
We are already seeing glimpses of the future in Ubisoft games. Origins feature romantic relationship and sex but the player had no control over it. Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is giving players more control over the dialogue options and romantic relationships.
A similar design is being used by other developers such as EA and CD Projekt RED. Cyberpunk 2077 is confirmed to have full frontal nudity and one night stands.
PS5 and the next Xbox will come out in the next few years. According to Sony, we are still three years away from the release of PS5. Meanwhile, we haven’t heard much about the next Xbox. However, it is codenamed scarlet and it is expected to cost around $500 at launch with a new revised controller.
