Intel Reportedly Kills Off “Sunny Peak” With Apple Dropping Intel As its Supplier

Things aren’t looking particularly bright for Intel with the launch of 2nd-gen AMD Ryzen CPUs, Spectre and Meltdown exploits, lack of any 8-core mainstream CPUs and more. Now reportedly Intel has killed off production of its Radio Chips “Sunny Peak following Apple dropping Intel as its supplier.

The report comes from CalcalisTech, who reveals that sources of theirs inside the company have confirmed and according to the company’s internal communication, Intel will no longer be providing 5G chips to Apple for iPhone.

Reportedly, Apple has notified Intel that it will no longer use its mobile modem for its next-gen iPhone. These Intel Radio chips are internally codenamed “Sunny Peak” and Intel has halted the production for its chips.

Intel has not only halted the production but the team working on Intel “Sunny Peak” has also been disbanded to work on different projects.

Apple has notified Intel it would not use a mobile modem developed by the chipmaker in its next-generation mobile device, Intel executives said in the communications. Further development of the modem component internally called “Sunny Peak” has been halted and the Intel team that’s working on the product will be redirected to other efforts,

According to the report, the executives considered Apple as the main “key mobile customer” for its 5G modem and expected Apple to be the “main volume driver” for the product.

For those who don’t know, Intel Sunny Peak is the 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip designed by Intel for iPhone. According to Intel, Apple’s decision to drop Intel as its supplier for its mobile modem is the result of various factors.

Speaking of Intel, recently 9th-gen Intel Coffee Lake-S CPUs emerged in official documents which include:

  • Core i5-9600K
  • Core i5-9500
  • Core i5-9400
  • Core i3-9100
  • Core i3-9000.

While these CPUs were mentioned in the documents but Intel didn’t reveal any specs for them. However, shortly after the leak, Intel has officially confirmed the specs for its upcoming 9th-gen Intel Coffee Lake-S CPUs.

Not only that, two Intel Whiskey Lake-U CPU have also leaked online. The leaked Intel Whiskey Lake-U CPUs are Core i5-8265U and Core i7-8565U.

Furthermore, Intel is also preparing its Bean Canyon NUCs with Coffee Lake-U And Iris Plus Graphics. The upcoming Intel Bean Canyon NUCs come with Core i7-8559U, Core i5-8259U and Core i3-8109U.
