It is a commonly known fact that Cyberpunk 2077 was already on the drawing board well before The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released in 2015.
CD Projekt RED had dedicated only a handful of resources during the initial period but pre-production entered full force right after the second and final expansion pack, Blood and Wine, released in 2016.
Since the Polish developer was already working on the dystopian open world, a mention was cleverly placed in the Witcher finale for fans to discern. It should be noted that a teaser trailer was already out for Cyberpunk 2077 at this point and hence, it was pretty easy to recognize the Easter egg.
Following the debut trailer at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2018) earlier this month, CD Projekt RED has finally begun opening about Cyberpunk 2077. While a release date is still unavailable, it is as good a time as any to look back at the Easter egg.
Here is how the futuristic setting of Cyberpunk 2077 was teased in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The scene in question involves a conversation between Geralt and his adopted daughter Ciri. When asked about her whereabouts from the past years, Ciri revealed that she had been fleeing the Wild Hunt by jumping through portals to different worlds. However, she did not manage to completely escape her pursuers until she arrived in one specific world.
This is where Ciri hid for over half a year. She described this world to Geralt by pointing out that people had metal embedded in their heads. They waged wars from great distances and instead of horses, everyone had their own flying ships.
The description is easily relatable to a cyberpunk world where people undergo body augmentations and have access to futuristic weaponry and transport.
It should be noted that other dimensions are part of the original lore penned by author Andrzej Sapkowski for the Witcher saga. That being said, the reference to transhumanism is clearly a nod at Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Projekt RED.
While there is no word on what timeline will be followed, the possibility of finding Ciri wandering through the bustling districts of Cyberpunk 2077 would surely be an Easter egg for the developer to consider. Perhaps a side quest to come to her aid would be sublime.
CD Projekt RED has stated that a release date will only be revealed once development nears completion. For the time being, Cyberpunk 2077 is strongly speculated to arrive sometime next year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
