So Nero’s back in a surprise showing at Microsoft’s E3 conference that marks the return of Devil May Cry canon series, the main one, after a decade. We have gathered everything you need to know about your favorite hack n slash/demon-hunting title.
A New Look for Nero and Devil May Cry 5
One thing that is evident from the trailer shown at the conference is how the visuals have received a complete overhaul from the last entry or spin-off, DmC. The environments look much more detailed and grim in comparison and everything feels a tad more realistic.
Of course, this was the very intention of the game’s director, Hideaki Itsuno as he points out in a brief interview at Inside Xbox:
“… my boss came to me and said that in order to keep it (the game) relevant for today, we’ll need to make something that you can take one glance at and know that it’s quality. So we chose to make a game with a photo-realistic graphics style”
The director also noted how animations were also reworked so to keep every smooth and fluid and prevent the game from falling in ‘uncanny valley’. The brilliant visuals and inventive gameplay aren’t so surprising seeing as how it runs on the same engine as Resident Evil 7 (RE engine).
Setting and Plot Details
According to the director, Devil May Cry 5 takes place years after the events of Devil May Cry 4 and is a direct sequel. There is a novel that will connect the two games and tell us what happened in between.
The director gives a brief insight into this novel by saying that Dante has granted his neon devil may cry sign to Nero and it is now up to him to save the world.
Nero has now set up a mobile demon-hunting agency along with a friend to track down and hunt all demons around the city. The female friend, Nico is the daughter of the legendary gunsmith, Nell Goldstein. She, just like her father, is amazing at crafting weapons and that robotic arm is one of her inventions.
The story will take place in Red Grave City where the demon onslaught is started with the introduction of a giant monster tree that exists to suck the innocent beings’ blood.
What’s New in Combat?
If there is a thing that stands out throughout the trailer for the game, it is the new robotic arm of Nero. In the trailer, we can see him execute some cool moves and also use it as something to ride or fly on.
Moreover, watching the trailer closely, we can see the arm working as a hook to drawn enemies near. This makes the combat more aggressive and makes for combo opportunities.
The director describes this cyborg arm, called Devil Breaker, as a powerful weapon that will make the combat feel fresh and more exciting than ever. Apart from that, he has his same old Red Queen sword and the badass Blue Rose Shotgun to bring hell to the demons.
According to reports, the game will maintain a steady frame rate of 60 fps that means the combat is as fluid as possible. The game is also said to have three playable characters and Dante is set to make a return (both the box-art and the teaser hint towards it).
Devil May Cry 5 will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in Spring 2019 and will be published by Capcom, the studio known for the long-running Devil May Cry franchise and Resident Evil series.
