Fallout 76 has been getting a lot of attention ever since it was announced yesterday, but there has been a lot of negative attention because a lack of information about gameplay has led to fears that the game will just be Fallout Rust Edition and won’t be like Bethesda’s previous Fallout games.
Fallout 76 puts players (at the start, for now) in the Vault 76 shelter, hundreds of years before games like Fallout 3, 4, and New Vegas, and even before the original Fallout games. The year is 2102, tens of years after the Great War that destroyed the world in nuclear fire. Vault 76, far from being many of the other Vaults that all experimented on their occupants, was a control Vault, designed to re-colonize the world after the fallout had settled.
While it apparently won’t be Fallout Rust Edition according to Bethesda’s Senior Character Artist David Mejilones, others like Kotaku’s Jason Schreier has said that inside sources told him that it’s something like a mix between Rust, Ark Survival Evolved, and and DayZ, with elements of base-building and cooperative gameplay.
That’s a very big departure from other Fallout games, which are normally single-player only open-world RPGs where players can lose themselves in huge environments and hundreds of different locations to explore in. While a co-op Fallout (at least with reasonable numbers of people) might be fun, the emptiness of the Wasteland except for you and a companion is a big draw.
While we don’t know if a Fallout Rust Edition will be what comes out of Fallout 76, it’s likely that Bethesda will give us more information about the game when their own E3 conference comes around in a few weeks. Hopefully Fallout 76 will end up being a good game and will be able to make up for what a lot of fans thought was bad in Fallout 4.
