After the success of Far Cry 5 and previously Assasins Creed Origins, Ubisoft has revealed that they have a new game in line based on James Cameron’s Avatar movie which is currently in development but it will not come in a couple of years.
Ubisoft confirmed this to IGN during their earnings call that the game will not be released until after the start of their 2021 Fiscal year which starts on April 1, 2020.
The studio behind The Division series Ubisoft Massive and as well as a new studio called Ubisoft Stockholm will be in charge of developing the Avatar game.
The representative talked about Avatar by saying:
“Avatar is one of the biggest and most powerful entertainment brands … we have great plans for the new one, with a very strong studio and engine. The movie will be released end of 2020, so our game won’t be released before FY21.”
The company has also hired Patrick Bach this year which is a former Battlefield developer and will now lead the team even though the game is still far away from the release.
At the initial announcement of the game, Cameron said about the game that ”With the power of Massive’s Snowdrop game engine and the team’s passion and obsessive focus on detail, we know they’re the right group to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life.”
Apart from that, there hasn’t been much information about the game to share since the game has been announced. The company hasn’t revealed any release plans, platforms, gameplay or what the story is about. We know that the game will come to consoles and PC.
Ubisoft’s first Avatar game was released in December of 2009 alongside Cameron’s blockbuster movie and this time clearly we will get our hands on the game after the release of the movie which will be released in 2020.
