It has been more than four years since the Kryptonian first swooped into the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and since then, Warner Bros. has refrained from mentioning a potential sequel to be in the works for the standalone installment. There have been several rumors and speculations during this time about the untitled project, currently dubbed Man of Steel 2, but there may be hope yet.
According to a report from Revenge of the Fans earlier today, Warner Bros. has finally decided to go ahead with the highly anticipated sequel.
It should be noted that there is currently no director, producer, or even a script attached with Man of Steel 2. However, Warner Bros. is said to be eyeing 2020 as a release window. If the claim is true, Henry Cavill (Superman) could be ironing his red cape for use as soon as later this year.
There was word earlier this year that Man of Steel 2 could be officially announced before summer or so it was led to believe. In addition, the tentative release window was speculated to be 2021 at the earliest.
It has also been pointed out that Man of Steel (2013) was never intended to receive direct sequels and was actually supposed to launch a singular five-part storyline for Superman in similar fashion to the Harry Potter franchise. Hence, the reason that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) continued right from where the first movie left off and was followed by Justice League (2017) in the same manner.
Justice League Part Two, while remaining in limbo for now, should be the next in line for the Kryptonian with a release on June 14, 2019. Perhaps Man of Steel 2 could find its way into theaters right after in the following year.
For the time being, Superman is expected to make a cameo in Shazam! on April 5, 2019.
