It has only been a week since the premiere but Cobra Kai has already been given the green signal by YouTube Red to receive a second season.
According to the official announcement from earlier today, the television series has garnered “remarkable reactions” from the audience and it was only natural to bring back the cast for another take.
“This series had all of the right elements from the very beginning — compelling characters, a storied rivalry, and the talented original stars,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, YouTube. “The way viewers have embraced the new twist on this beloved franchise has been nothing short of amazing.”
“We are so elated with the performance of Cobra Kai,” said Jeff Frost, President Sony Pictures Television. “This has been a remarkable experience and the audience reaction only further validates what we already knew – that this team and series is exceptional and incredibly special.”
It will be a while before a synopsis surfaces for the second season but fans can pretty much expect the storied rivalry between Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) to continue on in new ways.
Cobra Kai is based on The Karate Kid franchise, created by Robert Mark Kamen, and follows the same titular actors in their same roles but as adults.
There were initial concerns about the episodic treatment falling short to capitalize on the nostalgia factor but the first season has proven otherwise. If anything, showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have a solid understanding of what made the original Karate Kid so popular. Hence, there are a lot of expectations from the next season.
The second season of Cobra Kai remains without a release date for the time being, except for a confirmed arrival next year. There is also no word on the number of episodes expected.
