The greatest detective in the world and his trusted companion are all set to return to tackle another grand mystery in the untitled installment, presently dubbed Sherlock Holmes 3.
According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter earlier today, the third installment has been slated by Warner Bros. to enter principal photography later this year. While there is no director currently attached to the project, producers Susan Downey (The Judge), Joel Silver (Collide), and Lionel Wigram (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) have been confirmed.
Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) and Jude Law (Dr. John Watson) are pegged to reprise their titular roles once again. The duo has already portrayed the respective characters in Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) to critical acclaim. There is no chance that Warner Bros. would risk it by replacing even one of them for the third take.
For the rest of the cast, Rachel McAdams (Irene Adler) is rumored to be jumping aboard as well. She has similarly been part of the first two installments and will likely rope in the detective for a devious scheme once again if the script allows it.
It has been eleven years since the last installment was released. Sherlock Holmes 3 has reportedly attempted to take off during this time but production woes and other factors have kept on pushing the slate forward.
If the proposed schedule suffers no more unprecedented delays, Sherlock Holmes 3 will release in theaters worldwide on December 25, 2020.
