The portfolio of video game composer David Wise, who worked on a variety of games such as Yooka-Laylee, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Snake Pass, is apparently hinting at the return of Battletoads with an unannounced game titled Battletoads 20/20. Whether it’s true or not remains to be seen, though.
Battletoads is known for being one of Rare’s most infamously difficult (and crass) games, and there hasn’t been an actual fully-fledged game for it since 1994. The games spawned a cult following and were even able to get the pilot of an animated TV show, but that series was never picked up (good thing too considering the cartoon was apparently garbage.)
The Battletoads have since made appearances in various other games, such as Shovel Knight, Killer Instinct, and Rare’s “Rare Replay” compilation game, which holds the 30 different games that the studio has worked on over the years. However, an actual game that’s fully devoted to them is still a pipe dream for Battletoads fans.
Despite that apparent confirmation, however, the return of Battletoads is still a rumor. David Wise’s actual page only says “20/20” on it, which might be more music related rather than Battletoads related, but the fact that the word was there at all might lead to some hints or an outright confirmation.
Microsoft has previously promised that they would have some surprises at this year’s E3, and a return of Battletoads would definitely be something of a surprise, and a welcome one too considering how the trio’s appearance in Shovel Knight and Killer Instinct have gone over with Xbox fans.
But regardless of whether or not the rumors are true, we’ll just have to wait and see whether or not Microsoft will announce anything Battletoads related at E3 this year. Considering that there’s only around a month and a half left until E3, we at least won’t have long to wait.
