Avengers: Infinity War Director Confirms Soulworld Theory

There are a number of elements from the source materials that were either teased or hinted in Avengers: Infinity War. This includes the Soulworld that was recognized for the time being by those familiar with the comic books but has now been given an official acknowledgement.

The Soulworld is a pocket universe that exists inside the Soul Stone. It has often been regarded as purgatory for captured souls that reside inside in complete harmony. There are only a handful of characters that have managed to escape the Soulworld. This is where things become interesting because that short list features Gamora.

Speaking during a promotional event (via Reddit) last week, co-director Joe Russo confirmed that the Soulworld was shown in Avengers: Infinity War. This is the orange-themed sphere where Thanos met with a younger version of Gamora at the end after he snapped his fingers to turn half of all life in the universe to dust. Hence, she is still alive but her soul is trapped inside the pocket dimension.

“Yeah it’s implied it’s the Soul Stone,” said Russo. “It’s all orange around, then he’s inside the Soul Stone, with the amount of power that it took to snap his fingers he has this out of body experience with Thanos. When he goes inside the Soul Stone, he has this kind of conversation with the younger version of his Gamora.”

There have been many fan-crafted theories about undoing the events from Avengers: Infinity War in the upcoming sequel. These mostly include travelling back in time to defeat the Mad Titan.

The directors recently teased that correcting the timeline will come at a “high cost” for everyone involved. We will just have to wait to see what is in store for those who have survived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Infinity War is now running in theaters worldwide and will open in China on May 11. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
