The past three decades have seen Dark Horse Comics “keep readers awake at night” with an expansive lineup of comic books dedicated to the Aliens franchise. The publisher has now decided to return to the point where it all began and re-release the earliest stories by collecting them all in a single volume.
“Aliens: The Essential Comics Volume 1” will feature the initial trilogy — Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum, and Earth War — that sees a handful of heroes (Rebecca “Newt” Jorden, Corporal Dwayne Hicks, and Ellen Ripley) join forces against the Xenomorphs.
The included stories were originally published between 1988 and 1991. For those concerned, Dark Horse Comics wants to assure that these stories are marked as essential for a reason because they “have stood the test of time”.
The first entry in the new collection series is scheduled to release in paperback on November 6, 2018, and can be pre-ordered right now from Amazon (or other participating retailers) for the price of $24.99. There will be 400 pages in total but the narration itself will cover about 368 pages, leaving the rest for beautiful illustrations and concept art.
“These are the comics stories that kept fear alive,” notes the listing. “From the depths of space, to bizarre alien worlds, and even to surface of our own dear Earth, in the pages of comic books there were dozens of sequels and spinoffs to the films, as well as original stories that carried the monsters and the mythos to new heights.”
Dark Horse Comics has confirmed that there will be a second and possibly more volumes in the new Aliens: The Essential Comics lineup. However, these are slated to arrive sometime next year.
Lastly, the Aliens franchise is not alone in receiving the essential treatment. “Predator: The Essential Comics Volume 1” is also being prepared in similar fashion for a release on December 18, 2018, for the same price.
