In the comic books, Adam Warlock has a strong association with the Infinity Stones and particularly, what Avengers: Infinity War is all about. While the character was teased in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) during the post-credits scene, he will not be part of the upcoming and highly anticipated culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. However, he almost did at one point.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight in a recent interview, screenwriter Christopher Markus revealed that Adam Warlock was originally intended to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. The character, though, had to be removed because it was felt that he needed his own solo debut before making such a massive appearance in an important event in the timeline.
“Well, there are some in the original Infinity Gauntlet series that are — Like, we didn’t introduce Adam Warlock, because it’s a massive backbend and you practically have to make an Adam Warlock movie to introduce him,” said Markus. “He just can’t walk onscreen.”
He also added that there was “a brief moment” where they considered to include the Silver Surfer as well, but the matter of licensing rights scrubbed the notion off.
“So, there was a brief moment where we were like, ‘Ehhh…,’ and then we were like,” added Markus, gesturing to the movie’s poster. “We have that many characters already! And then there were others we couldn’t use. Like, Silver Surfer would have been useful, but we can’t touch him. Currently.”
Adam Warlock is assumed to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2020) and was until recently theorized to be the one having the missing Soul Stone.
Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters on April 27, 2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
For those interested in keeping up with the timelines, the upcoming first part will take place at the same time as the events in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Black Panther (2018).
