It appears that earlier reports about the Eternals being prepped for introduction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) were indeed legitimate.
Speaking with The Wrap in a recent interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige officially confirmed that a movie based on the fictional race of superhumans has entered pre-production. The project is still in early development but will form the stage for Phase Four, the next evolutionary step for the cinematic timeline.
“Eternals is one of many, many, many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate,” said Feige.
However, Marvel Studios will refrain from talking too much about the Eternals until Phase Three has finally been wrapped up. The notion is understandable since all attention is currently on Avengers: Infinity War and the sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4. This also includes Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Captain Marvel between them.
“Those are the five things that are taking up 90 percent of our time,” explained Feige. “But there’s 10 percent we’re starting to go, ‘What’s going to be best?’ And some of that is you can take cues from everything we’ve done in the 22 movies before those — which is sequels to existing characters, new interpretation of existing characters and trying whole new swings with stuff that most people never heard of. So there are writers coming in on lots of different projects and lots of different ideas. And you’ll only start to hear more and more of it.”
In the comic books, the Eternals were created by the Celestials eons ago to defend Earth from all threats. They can be taken as somewhat close to divine beings, possessing great powers and incredibly long lifespans. While their mission is to ensure peace and balance in the universe, they are often engaged in an ancient war against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants.
Marvel Studios is said to be taking a cosmic approach for Phase Four in the MCU. The Eternals will take only one side of this grand stage, joined by various other space-hailing characters such as the Silver Surfer, Annihilus, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
