Every single installment that was released for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the past decade has contained a cameo from Stan Lee. However, the declining health of the legendary comic book writer has made it apparent that there will come a time when he can no longer push himself for special appearances. Thankfully, fans do not have to be concerned about such, at least for a few more movies.
Speaking with BBC Radio Scotland in a recent interview, co-director Joe Russo confirmed that Lee has already filmed a cameo for Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp.
“So, Stan, typically we try to get him out — he doesn’t love to fly — so we try to get him out for his cameos around the same time,” said Russo. “So if we other movies shooting on the same lot that we’re on, for instance Ant-Man 2 or Avengers 4, we group his cameos together and then move him from one set to the next and kind of get him through his cameos in one day.”
Lee celebrated his 95th birthday this past December. Despite his weakened state, Lee has still tried to make appearances in the public (as well as on-screen) as much as possible. This, though, has led to several cancellations in recent years. Lee was hospitalized a couple of years back and again this year after falling ill to shortness of breath and an irregular heartbeat.
Lee has created some of the most popular comic book characters in history. The list runs long and features the likes of Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Ant-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the X-Men. Yes, he pretty much assembled the Avengers on his own.
Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters on April 27, 2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019. Ant-Man and the Wasp, on the other hand, will release on July 6, 2018.
