It was around a month back when an accidental listing on Metacritic fueled rumors about the Silver Surfer making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. While the whole thing was explained to be a hoax shortly afterwards, fans still believe that the cosmic character will be part of the ensemble movie in some capacity.
Speaking with Yahoo! Movies in a recent interview, co-director Joe Russo made it clear that the Silver Surfer will not be making any appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.
“I don’t think we own Silver Surfer,” said Russo. “But it’s fan-wish fulfillment and, you know, if this Disney-Fox deal goes through there’s going to be a lot more characters coming into the Marvel universe, so some of those crazy fan theories might come true.”
For those unaware, the Silver Surfer played an important role in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline in the comic books. There could be a slim possibility of the directors sliding in the character for the sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, if the deal between Disney and 20th Century Fox goes through. However, fans should not hold their breath for that to happen.
Elsewhere, 20th Century Fox was reported last month to be resuscitating the Silver Surfer for another movie adaptation in the coming years. The character previously appeared in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) that went down as a critical failure in the box office. The movie earned a mediocre $289 million and was bashed by critics left and right.
There is no doubt that the Silver Surfer will eventually make his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe but this appears to be after the events of the Infinity Stones have passed.
Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters on April 27, 2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
