Birds of Prey, an upcoming spinoff adaptation that focuses on an all-female cast of superheroes and supervillains, is finally making headway.
According to a new report from The Wrap earlier today, the finalized script from writer Christina Hodson has left Warner Bros. “high” on anticipation. Hence, the top brass is ready to move forward with the search for a suitable director.
While there has been no official announcement yet, expect one to arrive in the coming days unless the studio has already picked out a favorite.
If the source materials offer any indication, Birds of Prey will feature the likes of Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Katana, Hawkgirl, and Harley Quinn — possibly reprised by Margot Robbie.
Since Hodson has already penned the Batgirl character for Birds of Prey in a well-received script, she is said to have been tasked by Warner Bros. to rewrite the script for the standalone debut of Batgirl as well. The project was left in a rut a few months back when writer-and-director Joss Whedon decided to part ways, supposedly because he could not come up with a proper storyline that would do the character justice.
Birds of Prey remains without a release date. It should be noted that even if a director is confirmed in the coming months, the movie might not immediately start production. If speculation holds any value, Birds of Prey should open in theaters somewhere in 2020. This will be a year after Suicide Squad 2 releases worldwide.
