Deadpool 2 Writer Shuts Down Black Tom Cassidy Rumor

Following a rumor from yesterday that Black Tom Cassidy (Jack Kesy) was cut from Deadpool 2 during the initial production phase, an official word has arrived to relay otherwise.

Taking to Twitter earlier today, co-writer Rhett Reese marked the claim to be “untrue” without mentioning any further details. There is still no word on whether Kesy has a part to play in the upcoming sequel and if that includes Black Tom Cassidy or some other supervillain.

The previous rumor suggested that director David Leitch wanted to make room for Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) in the script, eventually leading to the removal of Black Tom Cassidy.

However, it should be noted that Kesy was mentioned to be playing a supervillain in the initial casting announcement. While the actor has not been given any screen time in the trailers released so far, there is the possibility of his inclusion in the movie. Perhaps Black Tom Cassidy will surface in Deadpool 2 but in a minor capacity.

Black Tom Cassidy is a powerful mutant in the comic books that can channel energy blasts through a wooden staff. He has paired with several other supervillains over the years, including the Juggernaut. The character has been a strong adversary to the X-Men and was hired by the Shi’ar Empire to kidnap Lilandra Neramani for the M’Kraan Crystal during the Dark Phoenix storyline.

The character is more or less a thug for hire, which would make him perfect for the movie since the assembled cast already features a number of similar characters — the X-Force.

Deadpool 2 will open in theaters on May 18, 2018.
