There are a number of fan-crafted theories about where the last remaining Soul Stone currently resides, and in what form, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of them relates to Adam Warlock, a character in the comic books that has a long history of being associated with the Infinity Stones. This particular theory has now been shown the door for Avengers: Infinity War.
Taking to Twitter earlier today, director James Gunn responded to a fan by confirming that Adam Warlock has nothing to do with the Soul Stone.
You would be 99% incorrect then. Sorry!

Gunn filled in as an executive producer for Avengers: Infinity War and worked closely with the Russo brothers to bring the Guardians of the Galaxy characters together for the highly anticipated comic book adaptation. He was also recently given the exclusive opportunity to watch the final cut of the movie well ahead of the official premiere. If anyone knows where the Soul Stone is, it is probably Gunn.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) saw the Sovereign, a highly advanced and genetically engineered galactic race seeking to perfect themselves, create Adam Warlock to serve as a mighty weapon. They are also known for developing powerful cosmic batteries, much similar to the Tesseract. Hence, the reason that man fans began speculating about a connection between the character and the Soul Stone.
It should be noted that Gunn already mentioned last year that Adam Warlock will not be appearing in either Avengers: Infinity War or the untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4. The character is assumed to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2020) in some capacity.
Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters worldwide on April 27, 2018, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will being production early next year.
