New Essential Edition Series Listed by DC Comics, “Easiest Entry Points” for Readers

It can be pretty daunting for fresh readers to take their first jump into the comic book sphere. The solution from DC Comics in this regard is a brand new format called the Essential Edition series that is scheduled to arrive in fall.

While the publisher has not made an official announcement, at least three listings have been discovered (via CBW) on Amazon since last month. Hence, there is the possibility of more surfacing in the time to come.

The ones that can be pre-ordered right now are the following:

  • Batman: The Court of Owls Saga (September 18)
  • Justice League: The Darkseid War (October 9)
  • The Flash: Starting Line (October 30)

It should be noted that these popular comic books have been collected before as well. The difference with the new editions is that they are firstly collected in a single volume and secondly, the collected storylines do not require any background knowledge on the part of first-time readers to be enjoyed.

“The DC Essential Edition series of graphic novels highlights the best standalone stories the medium has to offer, featuring comics’ greatest characters,” the official description reads. “These trade paperback editions focus on the easiest entry points DC has in its vast library, with seminal, groundbreaking tales that transcend the printed page. Start with the Essentials.”

The greatest benefit, however, is in the cost. The listings confirm that the Essential Editions will be cheaper than past collections. Instead of purchasing two separate trade paperbacks — The Court of Owls and The City of Owls, a single “saga” edition will do the same job and at a lesser price. Not to mention that the price tag tends to fall with time as well.
