Following a few days after the internet began humming with rumors and speculations about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) taking a cosmic direction in the foreseeable future, word has arrived that the Eternals will make up “Phase Four” for Marvel Studios.
Taking to Twitter earlier today, veteran pop culture blogger Jeremy Conrad confirmed as such and stated that the new franchise is slated to launch right after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — somewhere between 2021 and 2022. Conrad has even established a new website dedicated to the “Marvel Cosmic” rumors, which might be his way to mark confidence in his industry sources.
The Eternals are a fictional race of superhumans that were created by the Celestials to defend Earth from all threats. They can be taken as somewhat close to divine beings, possessing great powers and incredibly long lifespans. While their mission is to ensure peace and balance in the universe, they are often engaged in an ancient war against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants.
The “space-based superhero team” is being taken as a natural progression by Marvel Studios that will make it easier to cross paths with other — more known — cosmic characters such as the Silver Surfer, Galactus, and Annihilus down the line. This end-game will, of course, come to fruition once the acquisition deal goes through with 20th Century Fox.
“Aside from comments about how Phase 4 would be more cosmic there have also been those reports about how James Gunn is helping Marvel Studios decide what directions to take their cosmic properties,” Conrad added. “And it sounds as if the groundwork for The Eternals is being put down right now.”
It is important to take all of this with a pinch of salt because of the unavailability of any official acknowledgement. That being said, if the aforementioned sources are legitimate, more details about the Eternals and Phase Four for the MCU are said to be leaking next week.
The untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will be the first movie to initiate Phase Four, as well as being the first movie to be set right after the untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War. It is scheduled to release in theaters on July 5, 2019. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will follow afterwards in 2020, hopefully alongside the standalone Black Widow movie.
