The fan-driven request to see Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) pair up again in Star Wars: Episode IX has been heard by the top brass.
The two lead characters were introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and returned in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) as well, only to be split up in the latter to pursue their separate paths. Thankfully, they are set to join forces once again in the third and last installment in the new trilogy.
While speaking with an audience during a panel at Awesome Con (via Slash Film) on the weekend, actor Boyega stated that he has zero knowledge about the plot finalized for Star Wars: Episode IX. However, he did share a little insight about his co-star, actress Ridley.
“I haven’t read the script for Episode IX but Daisy did shoot me a text saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together.’ That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again,” Boyega said.
Following their journey in the first installment, Rey and Finn have essentially become the core of the new trilogy in the franchise. In the last take, the characters were forced to go their separate ways in order to discover their true goals. This journey saw Rey stand on her own feet, and Finn to fight for something greater than himself.
They eventually reunited by the end, teasing that they would be sticking together in Star Wars: Episode IX. However, fans were a bit concerned that they might be split up again. That does not appear to be the case anymore. Rey and Finn will continue their fight against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order in the upcoming last installment.
Star Wars: Episode IX will open in theaters on December 20, 2019.
