While every character being assembled against Thanos and his Dark Order carries significance in the bigger picture, Thor in particular will be playing a much crucial role in Avengers: Infinity War.
Speaking with Comic Book in a recent interview, director Joe Russo revealed that the thunder god will have a “compelling” story to tell. In addition to having the most screen time in the highly anticipated movie — next to only Thanos, he will also carry forward his importance into the sequel to the saga.
“I think between Ragnarok and this film, I think Thor has a really, really compelling arc,” Russo said. “I think he’s a pretty fascinating character, and I think he’s going to jump to the forefront of people’s mind, as a pivotal Marvel character, after Ragnarok and this.”
Thor was last seen fleeing with his brother Loki and fellow Asgardians on a spaceship before they were ambushed by Thanos. With Asgard completely destroyed by Ragnarok and Mjolnir completely shattered by Hela, Thor — having lost an eye as well — must surely have seen better days.
In accordance with another post-credits scene and suggestive footage from the recent Avengers: Infinity War trailers, Thor will be going on a journey with Rocket Raccoon and Groot in search for a new weapon. According to several leaks by toy manufacturers, the character will eventually be forging Stormbreaker from the comic books, a hybrid between a hammer and axe but featuring the same powerful properties as Mjolnir.
Avengers: Infinity War will open in theaters on April 27, 2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
