While there are very few details attached to the upcoming new Matrix movie, one little aspect that has been revealed may end up revitalizing the critically acclaimed franchise for future installments.
Speaking with Screen Rant in a recent interview, writer Zak Penn suggested that the project will expand the same universe and lore set in place by the original trilogy. This will create new opportunities for storytelling within the same sphere without reusing the same source materials, and also without hurting the past storylines.
“I think OASIS (the interconnected virtual space in Ready Player One) is similar, both the Matrix and OASIS are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes,” Penn said. “And they are not, you know, when it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, there going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, the Matrix is still one of my favorite… they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.”
When the new Matrix movie was announced early last year, there was confusion about whether it will be a reboot of the franchise or a remake of the first installment. Penn later clarified, albeit vaguely, that it will be neither.
The latest statement helps to shed more light on the matter and it really seems that the upcoming entry will stand on its own feet and not the shoulders of the science fiction franchise. This means the introduction of new lead characters, a standalone plot, and a different perspective on the past installments. This also makes it apparent that Keanu Reeves (Neo) will unlikely make a return. On that note, Michael B. Jordan was rumored for some time to be filling in as a younger version of Morpheus.
There is currently no release date for the new Matrix movie. There is no word on even when the principal photography is scheduled to begin or what the movie will be called. For the time being, The Matrix 4 is the probable title.
