There were already concerns over the future of the television series, based on the fictional peacekeeping and spy agency from the comic books, but Agents of SHIELD now appears to be getting ready to draw the curtains for the last time.
Speaking with TVLine in a recent interview, showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen revealed that the finale of the ongoing fifth season is being written in a way to mark the end of the television series if the sixth season gets thrown out of the window.
However, if a new season is given the green light by the top brass, “there are certain things” being put together so that the finale can be adjusted at the last minute to continue the storyline later on.
“We’re ready for if this is the end,” Whedon explained. “We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.”
Agents of SHIELD is getting an average audience of 2.3 million viewers for the current season, which is the lowest in the entirety of the television series. After five long seasons, it is only natural for the audience to have grown a bit weary with the content.
“It’s definitely an emotional game changer,” Tancharoen added. “I think that nothing will be the same after, so that I guess is the definition of a game changer.”
Agents of SHIELD has twelve remaining episodes to wrap up the season and will return on March 2.
