20th Century Fox is said to be moving forward with the resuscitation of the Silver Surfer for another movie adaptation in the coming years.
According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter earlier today, writer Brian K. Vaughan has been assigned the important task of coming up with a script for the intergalactic travelling superhero. He is credited for penning certain episodes in the Daredevil (2015) television series adaptation, as well as for Runaways (2017) and Under the Dome (2017) among many other mentionable projects.
In the source materials, the Silver Surfer was originally an astronomer who saved his world from Galactus by agreeing to serve under him. He was in return bestowed with cosmic powers and tasked with finding new worlds for his master to consume. This journey finally led him to Earth where he came across the Fantastic Four and rediscovered his humanity. The Silver Surfer then decided to betray Galactus and save Earth, but was exiled as punishment for his actions.
The character first appeared on the silver screen in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) that went down as a critical failure in the box office. The movie earned a mediocre $289 million and was bashed by critics left and right.
The Silver Surfer is just one among several “secret projects” in the works at 20th Century Fox. The company is also said to be chalking out plans for at least three new X-Men movies in 2019 and 2020.
20th Century Fox certainly seems to be keeping itself busy for the future, despite having a landmark acquisition looming overhead from Disney. There is still no word if the deal will go through but the company is gunning for its projects nonetheless.
