Battlefield 1’s time appears to be coming to an end as Electronic Arts has announced that the next Battlefield game will be debuting at EA Play this year. EA Play is Electronic Arts’s own personalized news conference, which takes place a few days before E3 starts and it’s lost in the crowd.
Battlefield 1 was one of the most successful Battlefield games in a good while, taking place in the formerly untapped time period of the First World War. Exactly what the next Battlefield game will involve remains to be seen, but hopefully it’ll be just as good as Battlefield 1 was.
There have been some rumors that talk about the next game being set in World War 2, a time period that DICE hasn’t used since one of its first Battlefield games. Whether it’s the same sort of successful as Battlefield 1 could depend on what they do that’s different from World War 1.
Call of Duty: WW2, Sledgehammer Games’s most recent addition to the Call of Duty franchise, got good reviews and also got praise for taking a big step backward from Infinite Warfare, which was harshly criticized for going even further into the future than other Call of Duty games like Black Ops and Modern Warfare.
Of course, the next Battlefield game could also be something entirely different, even a possible futuristic setting like Infinite Warfare. However, the possibility of another huge backlash could keep EA and DICE from doing anything like that.
The last few Battlefield games have all taken place in modern times, but considering the success of Battlefield 1 that time period and constant power games between the United States, Russia, and China have likely gotten stale, we’ll probably be getting something other than that, as well.
However it turns out, the next Battlefield game will be coming to EA Play in June, so be on the lookout for more information.
